Break Your Subwoofer In
Much like the engine of a new automobile, a new subwoofer must go through a short but important process of “break-in” before it is run under harsh conditions. The “break-in” process will ensure the subwoofer is able to perform as it has been designed to. This process involves subjecting the subwoofer to no more than low-to-medium volume levels for a number of hours in the enclosure. 3-4 hours is generally sufficient for the subwoofer’s suspension to loosen enough to prevent the voice coil(s) from overheating and causing failure. The break-in period is also effective in extending subwoofer life. Over-driving the woofer before it has been properly broken-in will usually result in premature failure and poor performance.
But not water proof. There is a difference between the two. Since the MR105 lives near the water almost all the time, all of the major components such as the spider, surround etc. have been specially coated to have the protection that they need from corrosion that is present in a humid and salty environment.

Cone – Poly-Mica
The MR105 has a cone that is made up of both Polyurethane and Mica. Polyurethane is a resilient and durable manufactured material that can take the place of paint, cotton, rubber, metal or wood in thousands of applications across virtually all fields. Mica is a crystal formation that is found on rocks and can be commercially used in a variety of applications. It is chemically elastic, lightweight, and resilient. Combined, these two finished materials can take the form of cones that are used for speakers and subwoofers, contributing to the overall performance and long-lasting qualities.
Voice Coil – High Temperature Aluminum
One of the most abundant elements on earth, Aluminum is remarkable for its low density and for its ability to resist corrosion. It is nonmagnetic and does not easily ignite. This solid material has the ability to perform under stress in both high tension and high compression environments. Aluminum is relatively soft, making one of the more ideal materials to use in voice coils.
Surround – Butyl Rubber
Butyl Rubber is a synthetic material and is valued for its chemical inertness, impermeability to air, and the ability to endure or resist exposure to the many types of weather fronts. Butyl rubber has applications from sports equipment to automotive parts, the medical industry and more. We use them for the Surrounds that connect the cone to the basket. Did you know that most modern chewing gum uses food-grade butyl rubber as the central gum base, which contributes not only the gum's elasticity but an obstinate, sticky quality? Just like that chewing gum, the Butyl Rubber Surround in our speakers can take the equivalent amount of abuse without quitting on you.
Add some serious bass to your marine system with this 10-inch marine subwoofer from Boss. The 4-ohm MR105 delivers 1000 watts peak power (500 watts RMS) and offer moisture-resistance and UV protection for the harsh marine environment.
This 10-Inch Sub Delivers a massive 1000 Watts of power. A polypropylene cone provides great rigidity, moisture resistance, and low distortion. A rubber surround backs it up, for years of performance without the corrosion that can affect foam surrounds. A heat-resistant 2.5-inch Kapton voice coil drives things, for serious output with minimal heat.
Polypropylene cones, rubber surrounds and heavy duty polymer based frames are completely moisture-proof, so a blast of salt water won't hurt these speakers. Furthermore, a protective coating blocks UV rays from the sun, to keep the sun from doing its damage. Boss Marine products are also constructed to resist the destructive effects of chlorine, so they also make a great choice for installs in spas and around swimming pools.
Magnetic ferrofluid is utilized in this speaker's construction, between the magnet and voice coil, for added heat conductivity away from the voice coil itself. This allows the speaker to take much more power without damaging the voice coil.
